The shingles are asphalt backed and this asphalt forms an adequate seal around the nail. I do quite a bit of repair work on multiple types of roofing.

100 nails exposed under the seams of shingles. However roofing companies do sometimes make mistakes or a previous homeowner may have made some diy roof repairs that are not quite up to snuff.
